Our approach to sustainability comes down to three things we've been doing since the beginning: being deliberate about what we use, being responsible in how we make it, and building it to last long enough that none of it becomes waste.
01. SOURCE
What we choose matters.
We choose materials because they last, and because they have somewhere to go once their useful life is over. Our metal components are built to be recycled, not landfilled. Our solid wood is responsibly sourced and fully compostable. Every material in a Cumberland piece is chosen with its whole life in mind, not just the day it ships.
02. CRAFT
Made here. Made right.
Cumberland Furniture is made in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with materials sourced as locally as possible. Shorter supply chains mean a smaller carbon footprint before a piece ever ships. And when it does ship, it leaves in packaging cut specifically for that piece: a custom system that eliminates standard box waste and puts every scrap to work as protective cushioning. No excess. No throwaway material.

03. LAST
The most sustainable piece is one that stays.
The furniture industry generates a lot of waste, and not just in manufacturing. Product that gets worn down, specced out, and replaced too soon is part of it too. We build against that. Solid construction, quality materials, and designs with staying power mean our pieces hold up through lease cycles, reconfigurations, and years of real use. A piece that's still performing in 15 years is the sustainability argument we believe in most.
